Preventing Property Rental Fraud Scams

For Renters

Verify the Listing – Cross-check the property on multiple listing sites and be wary of prices significantly below market rates.

Confirm Ownership – Use County property records to verify the owner or legitimate property management company and ask for Identification.

Visit the Property in Person – Scammers often use fake or stolen photos. Never agree to rent a property you haven’t seen.

Avoid Cash Payments – Pay deposits and rent through traceable methods (e.g., checks, bank transfers). Avoid wire transfers or prepaid debit cards.

Beware of High-Pressure Tactics – Scammers may rush you into making payments before signing a lease. Take your time to review all documents.

Check the Lease Agreement – Ensure it’s detailed and includes terms like rent amount, due dates, and maintenance responsibilities.

Research the Landlord or Property Manager – Search for online reviews and verify business credentials if renting through an agency.

For Landlords

Screen Tenants Properly – Conduct background and credit checks to confirm a renter’s identity and rental history.

Use Secure Payment Methods – Accept rent payments through trusted property management platforms or verified bank transactions.
